Playas del Coco & the Papagayo Area North Guanacaste · Gulf of Papagayo Ideal: 2 to 5 Nights (Ideal Weekend or Short Break from LIR)
25–35 min from Liberia Airport (LIR) on paved roads (4.5 hrs from SJO)

Playas del Coco & the Papagayo Area

Costa Rica's most accessible beach getaway hub: a sheltered horseshoe bay 30 minutes from Guanacaste Airport (LIR) flanked by calm-water Playa Hermosa, Playa Panamá, and Playa Ocotal.

Access Reality: True weekend-ready hub if flying into Liberia (LIR): you can clear customs at 1:30 PM and be swimming or watching sunset by 2:45 PM. From San José (SJO), allow 4.5 hours via Route 1.
Tamarindo, Flamingo & Potrero Guanacaste Gold Coast Ideal: 3 to 5 Nights (Surf, Marina & Sunset Coast)
65–75 min from Liberia Airport (LIR) on paved roads (4.5 hrs from SJO)

Tamarindo, Flamingo & Potrero

Guanacaste's lively Gold Coast pairs Tamarindo's walkable surf-and-dining bay with the full-service Marina Flamingo, white-shell Playa Conchal, and calm Potrero Bay.

Access Reality: 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes from Liberia Airport (LIR) via paved roads through Huacas. Great for 3- to 5-night breaks from LIR; too far for a weekend drive from San José.
Nosara & Sámara Southern Nicoya Peninsula (Blue Zone) Ideal: 4 to 6 Nights (Slow Wellness, Surf & Reef Bay)
2 hrs 15 min–2 hrs 45 min from LIR (or 40-min domestic flight to Nosara NOB)

Nosara & Sámara

Two neighbors with distinct personalities on the Nicoya Peninsula: Playa Guiones (Nosara) is a protected greenbelt of yoga studios and consistent surf rollers, while Playa Sámara wraps around a horseshoe coral-reef bay ideal for families.

Access Reality: Requires 2.25 to 2.75 hours from Liberia (LIR) via Nicoya, with the final coastal stretch to Nosara containing curves and dusty/unpaved sections. Not an overnight stop—plan at least 3 to 5 nights (or fly into Nosara Airport NOB).
La Fortuna & the Arenal Area Northern Lowlands & Volcanic Highlands Ideal: 3 to 4 Nights (Volcano, Waterfalls, Bridges & Thermal Springs)
3 to 3.5 hrs from San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR) on paved mountain roads

La Fortuna & the Arenal Area

Costa Rica's premier inland getaway base: a dramatic volcanic cone rising above rainforest canyons, suspension bridges, whitewater rivers, sloth trails, and natural geothermal hot springs.

Access Reality: Roughly equidistant (3 to 3.5 hours) from both SJO and LIR airports along winding mountain roads. Do not attempt as a 1-night dash; give La Fortuna 3 nights so you have two full days for volcano trails and thermal soaking.
Monteverde & Santa Elena Cloud Forest Tilarán Mountain Range · Continental Divide (1,400m) Ideal: 2 to 3 Nights (Cool Highland Cloud Forest & Canopy Ziplines)
2 hrs 45 min–3 hrs from SJO or LIR via paved Route 606 (or 3.5 hrs Jeep-Boat-Jeep from Arenal)

Monteverde & Santa Elena Cloud Forest

Perched high along the misty Continental Divide, Monteverde trades tropical heat for moss-draped cloud forests, Resplendent Quetzals, world-famous canopy ziplines, hummingbird gardens, and high-altitude coffee estates.

Access Reality: Route 606 from the Pan-American Highway (Route 1) is now paved all the way into Santa Elena, taking ~2.75–3 hours from SJO or LIR, though steep mountain switchbacks require daytime driving before fog settles in.
Jacó & Herradura (Los Sueños) Central Pacific Coast Ideal: 2 to 4 Nights (Fastest Beach & Marina Escape from SJO)
1 hr 30 min from San José Airport (SJO) via Highway 27 & Route 34

Jacó & Herradura (Los Sueños)

The closest Pacific beach hub to San José: Herradura Bay hosts the upscale Los Sueños Marina (the departure dock for Tortuga Island catamarans), while neighboring Jacó offers surf schools, rainforest waterfall trails, and lively dining.

Access Reality: At just 90 minutes from SJO Airport via modern toll Route 27, Jacó & Herradura is the #1 realistic beach weekend escape for travelers landing in San José.
Manuel Antonio & Quepos Central Pacific National Park Coast Ideal: 3 to 4 Nights (Rainforest-Meets-Cove-Beaches & Marina Cruises)
2 hrs 45 min–3 hrs from SJO on paved Route 27 & 34 (or 25-min flight to Quepos XQP)

Manuel Antonio & Quepos

Where dense coastal rainforest tumbles directly onto white-sand coves: Manuel Antonio combines effortless monkey and sloth viewing with Marina Pez Vela catamaran sails, mangrove kayaking, and dramatic hillside ocean-view hotels.

Access Reality: 3 hours on paved coastal highway from SJO (or a 25-minute SANSA hopper flight into Quepos XQP). Remember that Manuel Antonio National Park is closed every Tuesday and requires advance online tickets via SINAC.
Uvita, Dominical & Ojochal (Costa Ballena) Southern Pacific Whale Coast Ideal: 3 to 5 Nights (Whale's Tail Marine Park, Waterfalls & Culinary Jungle)
3 hrs 40 min–4 hrs from SJO via paved Route 27 & Costanera Sur (Route 34)

Uvita, Dominical & Ojochal (Costa Ballena)

South of Manuel Antonio, the emerald Talamanca mountains press right against the Pacific along Costa Ballena: Dominical brings surf and Nauyaca Waterfalls, Uvita anchors Marino Ballena National Park's Whale's Tail sandbar, and Ojochal is famed for open-air jungle dining.

Access Reality: Allow nearly 4 hours of driving from SJO Airport along paved Route 27 and Route 34. Best planned as a 3- to 4-night southern break or paired with Manuel Antonio.
Drake Bay & the Osa Peninsula Wild South Pacific · Corcovado & Caño Island Ideal: 4 to 5 Nights Minimum (Fly-In or Boat-In Wilderness Getaway)
50-min flight from SJO to Drake Bay (DRK) / Puerto Jiménez (PJM), or 5 hrs drive + 1 hr Sierpe boat

Drake Bay & the Osa Peninsula

National Geographic's 'most biologically intense place on Earth': Drake Bay and Puerto Jiménez serve as the boat gateways to Corcovado National Park's Sirena Ranger Station and the coral reefs of Isla del Caño.

Access Reality: IMPORTANT ACCESS NOTE: Drake Bay is NOT an overland weekend drive from San José. Most visitors either fly 50 minutes on SANSA from SJO or drive 4.5 hours to Sierpe to catch the 11:30 AM or 3:30 PM river-and-ocean boat (wet beach landing). Plan at least 3 to 4 nights.
Puerto Viejo & Cahuita (South Caribbean) Southern Caribbean Coast · Limón Province Ideal: 3 to 5 Nights (Best in Feb–Apr & Aug–Oct Caribbean Sunshine)
4.5 to 5 hrs from San José (SJO) via Route 32 through Braulio Carrillo (or 40-min flight to Limón LIO)

Puerto Viejo & Cahuita (South Caribbean)

A completely different rhythm from the Pacific: palm-draped white and golden beaches (Playa Cocles, Punta Uva, Manzanillo), protected coral reefs inside Cahuita National Park, Bribri cacao forests, and Coconut Rice & Beans dining.

Access Reality: Requires 4.5 to 5 hours overland from San José via Route 32 (which can experience mountain rain delays in Braulio Carrillo). Do not plan as a 1-night stop—give Puerto Viejo & Cahuita 3 to 5 nights, or fly into Limón (LIO) + 50-minute taxi.
Tortuguero National Park Canals Northern Caribbean Rainforest Canals Ideal: 2 to 3 Nights (Boat-Access Jungle Canals & Sea Turtle Nesting)
Boat-or-Flight Only: 3.5 hrs road from SJO to La Pavona + 1 hr river boat (or 30-min flight from SJO)

Tortuguero National Park Canals

Often called Costa Rica's Amazon: a car-free network of freshwater lagoons, flooded rainforest creeks, and black-sand Caribbean beach where endangered green sea turtles nest from July through October.

Access Reality: No roads reach Tortuguero. Every visitor arrives either via a 30-minute domestic flight from SJO OR by road to the La Pavona / Caño Blanco river dock followed by a 1-hour covered riverboat. Ideal as a structured 2- or 3-night wildlife break.
San José & the Central Valley Highlands Central Valley · Poás, Irazú & Coffee Highlands Ideal: 1 to 3 Nights (Day Escapes, Volcano Craters & Coffee Estates)
15–35 min from San José International Airport (SJO in Alajuela)

San José & the Central Valley Highlands

Far more than an airport transit stop: basing in Alajuela, Escazú, or Barrio Escalante puts you within 60 to 90 minutes of Poás and Irazú volcano craters, Doka Arabica coffee estates, La Paz cloud-forest waterfalls, and historic museums.

Access Reality: The ultimate zero-hassle starting point when flying into SJO: even if you only have 1 or 2 nights before or after a beach trip, full-day guided excursions pick up right at airport and city hotels.
